On April 22, a meeting of the Council of the Heads of the Founding States of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS) was held in the capital of Kazakhstan. During the summit, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov put forward an initiative for the fundamental modernization of the legal and institutional framework of IFAS. This was reported by the "Turkmenistan: Golden Age" electronic newspaper.
The primary goal of the proposal is to transform the Fund into a new-level platform capable of attracting the world's most advanced technologies and large-scale investments to overcome the consequences of the ecological crisis in the region.
The Head of Turkmenistan emphasized the need to accelerate work on improving the contractual and legal framework of IFAS. These reforms will allow for the strengthening of the organization's activities not only at the regional level but also in the international arena as a legally protected and efficient instrument. Furthermore, it was proposed to fundamentally enhance the level and quality of the Fund's cooperation with UN specialized agencies, including confirming the international status of this structure through new UN General Assembly Resolutions.
Such an approach will create conditions for more active collaboration between IFAS and leading global financial institutions and international donors. The modernization of the Fund's framework and operational mechanisms will ensure a consistent flow of innovative solutions and global expertise to our region to ensure the environmental security of Central Asia.
