Turkmenistan and Georgia outline a series of initiatives to expand trade and economic ties

On May 7, the fifth meeting of an Intergovernmental Turkmen-Georgian Commission on Economic Cooperation was held in Ashgabat. This was reported online newspaper «Turkmenistan: Golden age».

The participants of the meeting focused on the importance of diversifying trade turnover, discussed the current state of export-import operations, as well as issues of expanding the range of export-oriented goods, including petrochemical, textile, and agricultural products.

The transport and logistics sector was identified as a priority area for bilateral cooperation. The participants exchanged views on the formation of a modern transport infrastructure capable of ensuring efficient cargo transportation along the Caspian Sea – Black Sea route, which will connect Central Asia and Europe.

In this context, special importance was given to the capabilities of the Turkmenbashi International Seaport as a crucial logistics center. The Georgian side expressed interest in increasing the volume of transit traffic through the port of Poti. Utilizing the potential of this port opens a shorter route to European markets for Turkmenistan and attaches strategic importance to cooperation within the framework of the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor.

One of the key issues discussed at the meeting was the energy sector. It was noted that there are broad opportunities for the implementation of energy projects and the development of the «Lapis Lazuli» transport corridor.

In this regard, the parties reviewed the prospects for the participation of Georgian companies in the implementation of various projects in Turkmenistan, as well as the possibilities of bringing Turkmen energy resources to international markets through the transit potential of Georgia.

Traditionally, the humanitarian sphere was named among the priority areas of cooperation. In this context, prospects for holding reciprocal Days of Culture, scientific conferences, and sporting events were discussed, which will contribute to strengthening friendship and mutual understanding between the peoples of Turkmenistan and Georgia.

Following the meeting, a corresponding Protocol was signed, which consolidated the agreements reached and identified specific directions for the implementation of the planned activities.
