On September 14, in the city of Vienna, as part of the 70th session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan to the IAEA organized a side event titled "Atoms for LLDCs: From Commitments to Action – Nuclear Science for the Implementation of the Awaza Programme of Action." This was reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.

The event was attended by high-ranking representatives and experts from international organizations, who discussed the role of nuclear science and technology in strengthening healthcare systems and the sustainable development of landlocked developing countries.

Speaking at the event, IAEA Deputy Director General and Head of the Department of Nuclear Sciences and Applications Najat Mokhtar, and Deputy Minister of Health and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan Azat Ovezov, noted the need for further infrastructure development, the introduction of modern technologies, and the training of qualified specialists in the prevention and treatment of oncological diseases.

Participants also examined issues related to the development of radiation therapy and nuclear medicine, medical physics, cancer care planning and personnel training. Special attention was paid to the role of the IAEA's Technical Cooperation Programme, PACT and the "Rays of Hope" initiative.

Following the event, the importance was emphasized of strengthening international partnership, sustainable investment and capacity building for the implementation of the provisions of the Awaza Programme of Action and for expanding LLDCs' access to the benefits of the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology.

The 70th session of the IAEA General Conference will continue its work until September 18.
