On February 25, 2026, a meeting was held between the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Office at Geneva, V. Hajiyev, and the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Martin Chungong.
During the meeting, the Turkmen side confirmed Turkmenistan's readiness to host the 16th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament and officially conveyed messages from the Chairperson of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan to the Union's leadership. This forum is considered a key milestone in the implementation of the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to declare 2028 the Year of International Law, put forward at the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.
The IPU Secretary-General accepted this initiative with gratitude and expressed his full support for Turkmenistan's intention to host the upcoming Summit.
The parties placed particular emphasis on the growing role of Central Asian states in developing inter-parliamentary dialogue. It was noted that Turkmenistan's active engagement in the international arena contributes to the advancement of a constructive agenda and the strengthening of peace through parliamentary diplomacy.
At the end of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their mutual interest in further deepening their partnership and agreed to continue close cooperation in preparation for the upcoming Summit.
