Honorable President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, speaking on April 22 at the meeting of the Council of the Heads of the Founding States of the International Fund for Saving the Aral Sea (IFAS), emphasized the need to bring cooperation with the United Nations to a new, qualitatively higher level in addressing the Aral issue. The Head of State of Turkmenistan put forward specific initiatives aimed at integrating regional issues into the global agenda. This was reported by the electronic newspaper "Turkmenistan: Golden Age."
As one of the key steps in this direction, it was proposed to jointly prepare a draft of a new UN General Assembly Resolution with the Central Asian countries. This document, dedicated to cooperation between the UN and IFAS, will be fully adapted to today's complex geopolitical and economic conditions. This initiative will create conditions for more effective support of regional issues by the international community.
Turkmenistan is also strengthening its diplomatic efforts toward the implementation of the UN Special Program for the Aral Sea Basin (UN SPAS). This program, previously submitted to the UN ESCAP commission, will allow for more active involvement of international structures and advanced expertise in the environmental and socio-economic restoration of the Aral region.
President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that environmental security issues should be considered not only at the regional level but also in close cooperation with specialized UN agencies and international financial institutions. In this regard, it was proposed to enhance the coordinating role of IFAS and establish clear mechanisms for interaction with international donors.
