On May 26, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov participated in the high-level open debate of the United Nations Security Council. The event, dedicated to safeguarding the purposes of the UN Charter and strengthening the central role of the organization in the world, was organized at the invitation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People's Republic of China, which currently holds the presidency of the Council. This was reported by the Information Service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
Speaking at the meeting, the head of the Turkmen delegation reaffirmed the country's commitment to its foreign policy course aimed at promoting peace, mutual trust, and preventive diplomacy. In his speech, the Minister drew special attention to the significance of the international initiatives put forward on the global stage by the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, and the President of Turkmenistan.
In this regard, the "Peace through Development" concept, which ensures the interconnectedness of peace and sustainable development, as well as the "Dialogue is the Guarantee of Peace" initiative, aimed at resolving conflicts through negotiations, were highlighted. The proclamation of 2025 as the "International Year of Peace and Trust" by the UN General Assembly at the initiative of Turkmenistan was presented as clear evidence of this.
Furthermore, speaking about the major events implemented by Turkmenistan in cooperation with the UN, the results of the Third UN Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC-3), held in Turkmenistan last August, were recalled. The Minister emphasized the importance of effectively implementing the Awaza Political Declaration and the corresponding Awaza Programme of Action adopted at the conclusion of the forum.
Information was also provided during the statement regarding ongoing initiatives in the scientific and practical fields. In particular, it was announced that work continues in the country to establish the University of Peace and Neutrality, which will train specialists in the fields of peace and preventive diplomacy.
In conclusion, Rashid Meredov emphasized the global importance of the proposals put forward by the President of Turkmenistan to develop a Global Security Strategy and to declare 2028 as the "International Year of International Law." Official Ashgabat once again declared its commitment to the UN Charter and its readiness to support international efforts in ensuring sustainable development and security.
