In Dushanbe, from 25 to 28 May 2026, the 4th High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action «Water for Sustainable Development, 2018–2028» was held. A delegation of Turkmenistan, led by Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan Tangryguly Atahallyyev, participated in the forum. This was reported by a press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, the head of the Turkmen delegation noted that Turkmenistan regards water resources as a key factor of sustainable development, regional stability, and international cooperation, especially given the transboundary nature of water resources in Central Asia.
Particular attention was given to Turkmenistan’s international initiatives in the water and environmental spheres. In particular, the importance of the proposal to establish a UN-backed Regional Council on Water Issues for Central Asia was highlighted as an effective mechanism for coordinating the interests of regional states.
The relevance of initiatives to establish a Regional Climate Technology Centre and a Regional Centre for Combating Desertification in Central Asia was also reaffirmed. These are intended to promote scientific cooperation, technology transfer, and the strengthening of regional collaboration.
Turkmenistan also reaffirmed its commitment to further developing international cooperation within the framework of key UN conventions on water resources, climate change, desertification, and biodiversity conservation, based on the interconnection of environmental processes and the need for an integrated approach to their solutions.
