On July 28, 2026, the first political consultations between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of New Zealand took place via videoconference at the department head level. This was reported by a press service of the Ministry of Foreign of Foregn Affairs of Turkmenistan.

During the meeting, diplomats discussed prospects for expanding political and diplomatic dialogue, noting aligned positions on promoting global peace and stability, and agreed to maintain mutual support for initiatives within the UN framework. The sides reviewed cooperation opportunities in sustainable transport, energy, and environmental security, highlighting joint efforts under the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Transport (2026–2035) and Turkmenistan's environmental initiatives for Central Asia.

Special focus was placed on boosting trade and economic ties, with both parties acknowledging significant potential in high technologies, agriculture, and water management, while expressing interest in establishing direct business contacts. In the cultural and humanitarian domain, plans were discussed for promoting inter-university cooperation, joint scientific research, museum and library exchanges, as well as collaborative initiatives within UNESCO.
