Turkmenistan expands international cooperation on methane emissions reduction

Turkmenistan is actively developing international cooperation in reducing methane emissions, minimizing anthropogenic impact on the environment and introducing environmentally friendly solutions in the energy sector. These areas were discussed at the Regional Conference “From Methane Data to Action: Strengthening Methane Emissions Management, Mobilizing Capital and Advancing Regional Cooperation in Central Asia”, held in Ashgabat on October 29–30. This was reported by the electronic newspaper “Turkmenistan: Golden Age”.

The forum was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) with the support of the Ministry of Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan and Global Methane Hub (GMH). The event was held within the framework of the CA CBMER project aimed at enhancing capacities for methane emissions reduction in the oil and gas sector.

During the conference, Adviser on Environmental and Water Issues of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Magtymguly Akmyradov delivered a presentation on the country’s key climate agenda priorities. He emphasized the importance of methane emissions reduction in addressing climate change and highlighted the need for comprehensive measures in this area.

The Turkmen representative noted that despite possessing significant energy resources, the country pays special attention to introducing environmentally friendly and resource-saving technologies in the oil and gas, energy and transport sectors. State policy in this area is implemented based on the National Climate Change Strategy and relevant legislative frameworks.

The speech also highlighted that Turkmenistan is an active participant in the Paris Climate Agreement and joined the Global Methane Pledge in 2023, reaffirming its contribution to international efforts aimed at reducing methane emissions.

Special attention was also given to the development of renewable energy sources in the country. Efforts are being made to effectively utilize solar and wind energy potential. Among the key projects mentioned were the construction of a hybrid solar and wind power plant in Balkan velayat and the introduction of autonomous energy systems in remote areas of the country.

Turkmenistan confirmed its readiness to further strengthen cooperation with the structures of the United Nations, international financial and environmental organizations, as well as the scientific community in achieving common climate change adaptation goals.

The Regional Conference became an important platform for exchanging experience on methane emissions reduction in Central Asia, introducing advanced technologies and identifying new cooperation opportunities for environmentally sustainable development.
