Preparations for the upcoming elections scheduled for March 29 are well underway across Turkmenistan. These elections will fill seats for members of the newly formed district (etrap) halk maslahaty, vacant seats in the Mejlis (Parliament), and members of provincial, district, and city councils, as well as local Gengesh councils. Following national electoral laws, the process has entered one of its most vital phases: the nomination of candidates.
Currently, meetings are being held in Ashgabat and all provinces to nominate candidates from the Democratic Party, the Party of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs, the Agrarian Party, and various citizen groups. During these sessions, the most distinguished representatives are being put forward for legislative and local government bodies. These nominees include respected professionals and hardworking individuals with extensive experience across various sectors of the national economy.
In accordance with the Electoral Code, there is no limit on the number of nominees, and several candidates are typically proposed for each seat. This ensures that the elections will be held on a competitive, multi-candidate basis. To guarantee transparency and openness, national observers appointed by political parties, public associations, and citizen groups will monitor the entire process.
The elections on March 29 mark a significant step in the democratic transformation initiated by the National Leader of the Turkmen people and carried forward under the leadership of the President of Turkmenistan. This campaign serves as a clear demonstration of the deep-rooted democratic principles within Turkmen society, aimed at strengthening the nation’s sovereignty and its democratic foundations.
